What Is a Midrange Speaker?

The driver that carries voices and instruments in the middle of the band — defined, sized and compared.

The short definition

A midrange speaker is the driver that reproduces the middle of the audible band — roughly the range where voices and most instrument fundamentals live — between the subwoofer's low end and the tweeter's top end. In a multi-way system it is the driver you hear most directly, which is why midrange quality dominates how a system is judged.

What the band looks like in practice

Published figures make the definition concrete. In this catalogue, the fully specified midrange models publish frequency responses such as 200 Hz–10 kHz (the MD-65S23-06, at 100 dB sensitivity) and 110 Hz–11 kHz (the MD-65S20-07). That is the midrange's working band: it starts above the subwoofer's range and hands over to the tweeter at the top. Models voiced lower — the mid-bass titles in the catalogue — reach further down toward the subwoofer; models voiced for PA work publish higher sensitivities for projection.

Sizes and where they are used

The catalogue organises midrange by size: 6.5 inch (30 models, the car-door standard), 8 inch (24 models, car and compact PA) and 10 inch (15 models, PA-leaning). Construction varies across the family — paper cones with cloth edges or surrounds are standard in the specified models, with aluminium-bullet variants for high-output builds. Ferrite motors dominate; the catalogue also lists neodymium variants where mounting depth and weight matter.

Midrange vs full-range vs mid-bass

  • Full-range: one driver attempts the whole band — simple, but gives up output at both ends.
  • Midrange: optimised for the middle band inside a multi-way system.
  • Mid-bass: voiced lower, bridging subwoofer and midrange — in this catalogue, a title used across the midrange and woofer families, not a separate family.

If you are specifying a system, start from the crossover points your design needs, then pick the midrange whose published band covers them with margin — the specified models' tables are the reliable comparison, not the catalogue titles.
